Scent Notes:

TOP:  Pear, Citrus & Peach Blossom

MIDDLE:  Cashmere, Amber & Jasmine

BASE:  Vanilla, Sandalwood & Musk

This candle's fragrance and scent profile pays homage to and honors my Peace Corps experience in Madagascar.  The town of Sambava is the regional capital of the SAVA region in northern Madagascar where I served for 2 years in the Peace Corps.

This candle's scent is rich, elevated by warm vanilla, elevated by woody cashmere and sweet amber, and rounded out with slightly detectable notes of florals of jasmine and peach blossom and hints of citrus.

Geography:

Sambava is located in northeastern Madagascar and is a coastal town and the agricultural hub of the SAVA region, which stands for the 4 main towns (Sambava, Antalaha, Vohemar, and Andapa).  80% of the world's vanilla comes from this region in Madagascar alone.

The name Sambava translates to "same mouth" in English from Malagasy (samby vava) - relating to the series of rivers that flow through the SAVA region, all terminating in Sambava into the Indian Ocean.

The Sambava Chapter:

Sambava will always hold a special place in my heart.  For 2 years, it served as an important place within the region for networking, Peace Corps meetups with fellow SAVA region volunteers, agricultural industry, meeting with government officials, as well as concerts, nightlife, and of course the beach!  Many of my best Malagasy friends are from Sambava (and other parts of SAVA) and the memories I have from this place and this chapter in my life are incredibly special.

I even had opportunities to serve as a translator for NGOs from the U.K. and U.S because of my strong knowledge and ability to speak the dialects spoken in the SAVA region (Betsimisaraka Avaratra & Tsimihety).  So many incredible opportunities and memories from this special part of the world. So many lifelong friends and mentors made. Some of the best fruits and vegetables I've ever eaten.  The smell of vanilla and cloves in the air. The smell of the ocean. Many late nights and many early mornings on the beach.  I am forever grateful for the amazing 2 years I got to spend in this part of the world.

Care information

Here at VAKANSE CANDLE CO., we aim to bring joy and contentment to your space by filling it up with inspiring, aromatic notes conducive to peace and relaxation.  Remember to always follow the candle care tips below (DO's & DON'Ts) whenever your candle is in use.

DO's

  1. When using your candle for the first time, leave it to burn for 3-4 hours, until all of the wax on the surface has become liquid.
  2. Trim your candle's wooden wick to 3/16" before each burn to ensure a steady, soot-free flame. A pair of scissors or wick trimmers are recommended, though you should be able to trim the wooden wick with your fingers using a small piece of tissue to break off the burnt wood.
  3. Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and any debris at all time.
  4. Extinguish a candle is it smokes, flickers, or if the flame becomes too high.  These are signs that the candle is not burning properly and the flame isn't controlled.  Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check the space for drafts before re-lighting.
  5. To maximize scent throw, burn the candle in its desired space for 30 minutes with the door(s) closed.  Open doors and windows will disperse the candle's scent.
  6. Burn your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time.
  7. If you've created a large wax pool during your burn, use a snuffer or blow the candle out VERY gently to avoid splattering the hot wax!
  8. Wait until the flame is completely extinguished and clear of smoke before replacing your candle's lid.

DON'Ts

  1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.  Lit candles should be in sight at all times!
  2. Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, books, bedding, loose papers, fabric, drapes, decorations, etc.
  3. Don't burn candles near drafts: open windows, A/C units, vents, fans, etc.
  4. Keep candles out of the reach of pets & children.
  5. Don't burn your candle for more than 3 hours at a time.
