No. 2 | Madagascar
Scent Notes:
TOP: Allspice, Leather, Amaretto & Powder
MIDDLE: Clove, Tobacco, Balsam Fir & Tonka
BASE: Sandalwood, Peppercorn, Oud & Rum
Madagascar is rich in culture, history, and fragrance. During my time in the Peace Corps, I worked with tobacco and clove farmers, spent a lot of time in the woods, and sampled the local rum - for R&D purposes, of course - as someone from a part of the world known for world-class rum.
I knew I wanted to create a woodsy, complex, and unique scent that captured the magic of Madagascar in as many ways as possible. And after much experimentation, it came together perfectly.
This is a bold, complex fragrance with wide appeal. It leads with spicy top notes of allspice & sweet amaretto. Middle notes of clove, balsam & tonka bean blend into the woody, deep base of sandalwood, oud, and rum.
Geography:
Madagascar is often called the 8th Continent of the World. It is one of the most spectacular places on the face of the earth. It is the fourth largest island in the world, after Greenland, New Guinea, and Borneo. Roughly 70% of the fauna and 90% of the flora is endemic to the island of Madagascar, which makes it one of the most ecologically fascinating and biodiverse places on Earth.
The Madagascar Chapter:
After returning home to the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2014, after just shy of 2 years in the Virgin Islands, I was offered an opportunity to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar! I left St. Thomas in early February 2016 to begin serving my 27-month commitment as a part of the Sustainable Agriculture and Community Economic Development program between Madagascar & the U.S. It was absolutely, and without a doubt, the most incredibly transformative time in my life. I am forever humbled by the experience and the gracious hospitality of the many Malagasy communities I was welcomed into during my time in Madagascar.

Care information
Care information
Here at VAKANSE CANDLE CO., we aim to bring joy and contentment to your space by filling it up with inspiring, aromatic notes conducive to peace and relaxation. Remember to always follow the candle care tips below (DO's & DON'Ts) whenever your candle is in use.
DO's
- When using your candle for the first time, leave it to burn for 3-4 hours, until all of the wax on the surface has become liquid.
- Trim your candle's wooden wick to 3/16" before each burn to ensure a steady, soot-free flame. A pair of scissors or wick trimmers are recommended, though you should be able to trim the wooden wick with your fingers using a small piece of tissue to break off the burnt wood.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and any debris at all time.
- Extinguish a candle is it smokes, flickers, or if the flame becomes too high. These are signs that the candle is not burning properly and the flame isn't controlled. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check the space for drafts before re-lighting.
- To maximize scent throw, burn the candle in its desired space for 30 minutes with the door(s) closed. Open doors and windows will disperse the candle's scent.
- Burn your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time.
- If you've created a large wax pool during your burn, use a snuffer or blow the candle out VERY gently to avoid splattering the hot wax!
- Wait until the flame is completely extinguished and clear of smoke before replacing your candle's lid.
DON'Ts
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Lit candles should be in sight at all times!
- Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, books, bedding, loose papers, fabric, drapes, decorations, etc.
- Don't burn candles near drafts: open windows, A/C units, vents, fans, etc.
- Keep candles out of the reach of pets & children.
- Don't burn your candle for more than 3 hours at a time.
