Scent Notes:

TOP:  Lemon Peel, Bergamot, Citrus & Ozone

MIDDLE:  Hemp, Cedar, Benzoin & Sandalwood

BASE:  Powder, Dark Musk, Amber & Vetiver

Native to India but grown throughout the tropics, Vetiver has been been used for centuries to naturally enhance perfumes, foods, and medicines. I created a custom fragrance oil for this candle, so it exudes a sophisticated mix of citrus, musk, and earthiness that creates an uplifting, soothing, and calming aroma. In Asia, vetiver is beloved for its woody & smoky aroma that has perfumed temples and houses for centuries.

This candle's scent is rich with amber and a warm, earthy blend of sandalwood and musk. Top notes of airy ozone and a hint of citrus open up to a sandalwood core that’s smoothed out with the light, sweet and vanilla-like aroma of benzoin.

Geography:

Shanghai, on China’s central coast, is China's biggest city and a global financial hub. Its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Across the Huangpu River rises the Pudong District's futuristic skyline.  With a population of 24.89 million as of 2021, Shanghai is the most populous urban area in China with 39,300,000 inhabitants living in the Shanghai metropolitan area, the second most populous city proper in the world.

The Shanghai Chapter:

I studied Mandarin Chinese all four years I attended Denison University. I always knew I wanted to live in China at some point in my life.  As an Economics and Environmental Studies major studying Chinese, it was a no-brainer.

Years later, before I even received my Peace Corps invitation, a large private education company recruited me to teach English in China to students aged 3-17.  I explained to my recruiter that I was interested in a Peace Corps opportunity in Madagascar, and if I was accepted, I'd choose Peace Corps and then go to China right after my 2+ years were up.  They agreed that I was already qualified as is, so they were elated to put my offer on hold until I was done with my Peace Corps Service.

After a few months of work and travel in Italy and throughout Europe, and an arduous visa process in between, I made it to Shanghai and absolutely fell in love with the overall electricity of the city.  It's old meets new in China. It's a world of contrasts, top-tier food, international diversity, nightlife, and everything in between. I was teaching English by day, and club promoting by night for the likes of Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, and more.  I made friends from all over the world in Shanghai and couldn't be more grateful for such a rich experience there.

Care information

Here at VAKANSE CANDLE CO., we aim to bring joy and contentment to your space by filling it up with inspiring, aromatic notes conducive to peace and relaxation.  Remember to always follow the candle care tips below (DO's & DON'Ts) whenever your candle is in use.

DO's

  1. When using your candle for the first time, leave it to burn for 3-4 hours, until all of the wax on the surface has become liquid.
  2. Trim your candle's wooden wick to 3/16" before each burn to ensure a steady, soot-free flame. A pair of scissors or wick trimmers are recommended, though you should be able to trim the wooden wick with your fingers using a small piece of tissue to break off the burnt wood.
  3. Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and any debris at all time.
  4. Extinguish a candle is it smokes, flickers, or if the flame becomes too high.  These are signs that the candle is not burning properly and the flame isn't controlled.  Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check the space for drafts before re-lighting.
  5. To maximize scent throw, burn the candle in its desired space for 30 minutes with the door(s) closed.  Open doors and windows will disperse the candle's scent.
  6. Burn your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time.
  7. If you've created a large wax pool during your burn, use a snuffer or blow the candle out VERY gently to avoid splattering the hot wax!
  8. Wait until the flame is completely extinguished and clear of smoke before replacing your candle's lid.

DON'Ts

  1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.  Lit candles should be in sight at all times!
  2. Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, books, bedding, loose papers, fabric, drapes, decorations, etc.
  3. Don't burn candles near drafts: open windows, A/C units, vents, fans, etc.
  4. Keep candles out of the reach of pets & children.
  5. Don't burn your candle for more than 3 hours at a time.
